With the introduction of the laterally bounded forces, the tilt-rotor gains more flexibility in the controller design. Typical Feedback Linearization methods of controlling this vehicle utilize all the inputs; the magnitudes as well as the directions of the thrusts are maneuvered simultaneously based on a unified control rule. Although several promising results indicate that these controllers may track the desired complicated trajectories, the tilting angles are required to change relatively fast or in large scale during the flight. This problem challenges the applicability of these control algorithms. The recent idea in sacrifice the number of input and deem the tilt-rotor an under-actuated system may solve this problem; the tilting angles are fixed or vary in a predetermined pattern without being maneuvered by the control algorithm. By careful avoidance of the singular decoupling matrix, several attitudes can be tracked without changing the tilting angles unexpectedly. While the position was not directly regulated by the Feedback Linearization methods in that research, which left the position-tracking still an open question. In this research, we elucidate the coupling relationship between the position and the attitude. Based on this, we design the position-tracking controller adopting Feedback Linearization. We also plan the gait for the tilt-rotor based on the cat-trot gait. The controller is verified in Simulink, MATLAB. Three types of references are designed for our tracking experiments: setpoint, uniform rectilinear motion, and uniform circular motion. The significant improvement with less steady state error is witnessed after equipping with our modified position-attitude decoupler. This steady state error is also influenced by the frequency of the cat-trot gait.
Optimal feedback control (OFC) is a theory from the motor control literature that explains how humans move their body to achieve a certain goal, e.g., pointing with the finger. OFC is based on the assumption that humans aim to control their body optimally, within the constraints imposed by body, environment, and task. In this paper, we explain how this theory can be applied to understanding Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in the case of pointing. We propose that the human body and computer dynamics can be interpreted as a single dynamical system. The system state is controlled by the user via muscle control signals, and estimated from observations. Between-trial variability arises from signal-dependent control noise and observation noise. We compare four different models from optimal control theory and evaluate to what degree these models can replicate movements in the case of mouse pointing. We introduce a procedure to identify parameters that best explain observed user behavior. To support HCI researchers in simulating, analyzing, and optimizing interaction movements, we provide the Python toolbox OFC4HCI. We conclude that OFC presents a powerful framework for HCI to understand and simulate motion of the human body and of the interface on a moment by moment basis.
We built a vision system of curling robot which can be expected to play with human curling player. Basically, we built two types of vision systems for thrower and skip robots, respectively. First, the thrower robot drives towards a given point of curling sheet to release a stone. Our vision system in the thrower robot initialize 3DoF pose on two dimensional curling sheet and updates the pose to decide for the decision of stone release. Second, the skip robot stands at the opposite side of the thrower robot and monitors the state of the game to make a strategic decision. Our vision system in the skip robot recognize every stones on the curling sheet precisely. Since the viewpoint is quite perspective, many stones are occluded by each others so it is challenging to estimate the accurate position of stone. Thus, we recognize the ellipses of stone handles outline to find the exact midpoint of the stones using perspective Hough transform. Furthermore, we perform tracking of a thrown stone to produce a trajectory for ice condition analysis. Finally, we implemented our vision systems on two mobile robots and successfully perform a single turn and even careful gameplay. Specifically, our vision system includes three cameras with different viewpoint for their respective purposes.
This paper presents a control framework on Lie groups by designing the control objective in its Lie algebra. Control on Lie groups is challenging due to its nonlinear nature and difficulties in system parameterization. Existing methods to design the control objective on a Lie group and then derive the gradient for controller design are non-trivial and can result in slow convergence in tracking control. We show that with a proper left-invariant metric, setting the gradient of the cost function as the tracking error in the Lie algebra leads to a quadratic Lyapunov function that enables globally exponential convergence. In the PD control case, we show that our controller can maintain an exponential convergence rate even when the initial error is approaching $\pi$ in SO(3). We also show the merit of this proposed framework in trajectory optimization. The proposed cost function enables the iterative Linear Quadratic Regulator (iLQR) to converge much faster than the Differential Dynamic Programming (DDP) with a well-adopted cost function when the initial trajectory is poorly initialized on SO(3).
Monocular SLAM in deformable scenes will open the way to multiple medical applications like computer-assisted navigation in endoscopy, automatic drug delivery or autonomous robotic surgery. In this paper we propose a novel method to simultaneously track the camera pose and the 3D scene deformation, without any assumption about environment topology or shape. The method uses an illumination-invariant photometric method to track image features and estimates camera motion and deformation combining reprojection error with spatial and temporal regularization of deformations. Our results in simulated colonoscopies show the method's accuracy and robustness in complex scenes under increasing levels of deformation. Our qualitative results in human colonoscopies from Endomapper dataset show that the method is able to successfully cope with the challenges of real endoscopies: deformations, low texture and strong illumination changes. We also compare with previous tracking methods in simpler scenarios from Hamlyn dataset where we obtain competitive performance, without needing any topological assumption.
Collision avoidance is a widely investigated topic in robotic applications. When applying collision avoidance techniques to a mobile robot, how to deal with the spatial structure of the robot still remains a challenge. In this paper, we design a configuration-aware safe control law by solving a Quadratic Programming (QP) with designed Control Barrier Functions (CBFs) constraints, which can safely navigate a mobile robotic arm to a desired region while avoiding collision with environmental obstacles. The advantage of our approach is that it correctly and in an elegant way incorporates the spatial structure of the mobile robotic arm. This is achieved by merging geometric restrictions among mobile robotic arm links into CBFs constraints. Simulations on a rigid rod and the modeled mobile robotic arm are performed to verify the feasibility and time-efficiency of proposed method. Numerical results about the time consuming for different degrees of freedom illustrate that our method scales well with dimension.
There has been an arising trend of adopting deep learning methods to study partial differential equations (PDEs). This article is to propose a Deep Learning Galerkin Method (DGM) for the closed-loop geothermal system, which is a new coupled multi-physics PDEs and mainly consists of a framework of underground heat exchange pipelines to extract the geothermal heat from the geothermal reservoir. This method is a natural combination of Galerkin Method and machine learning with the solution approximated by a neural network instead of a linear combination of basis functions. We train the neural network by randomly sampling the spatiotemporal points and minimize loss function to satisfy the differential operators, initial condition, boundary and interface conditions. Moreover, the approximate ability of the neural network is proved by the convergence of the loss function and the convergence of the neural network to the exact solution in L^2 norm under certain conditions. Finally, some numerical examples are carried out to demonstrate the approximation ability of the neural networks intuitively.
The dynamic response of the legged robot locomotion is non-Lipschitz and can be stochastic due to environmental uncertainties. To test, validate, and characterize the safety performance of legged robots, existing solutions on observed and inferred risk can be incomplete and sampling inefficient. Some formal verification methods suffer from the model precision and other surrogate assumptions. In this paper, we propose a scenario sampling based testing framework that characterizes the overall safety performance of a legged robot by specifying (i) where (in terms of a set of states) the robot is potentially safe, and (ii) how safe the robot is within the specified set. The framework can also help certify the commercial deployment of the legged robot in real-world environment along with human and compare safety performance among legged robots with different mechanical structures and dynamic properties. The proposed framework is further deployed to evaluate a group of state-of-the-art legged robot locomotion controllers from various model-based, deep neural network involved, and reinforcement learning based methods in the literature. Among a series of intended work domains of the studied legged robots (e.g. tracking speed on sloped surface, with abrupt changes on demanded velocity, and against adversarial push-over disturbances), we show that the method can adequately capture the overall safety characterization and the subtle performance insights. Many of the observed safety outcomes, to the best of our knowledge, have never been reported by the existing work in the legged robot literature.
Background. From information theory, surprisal is a measurement of how unexpected an event is. Statistical language models provide a probabilistic approximation of natural languages, and because surprisal is constructed with the probability of an event occuring, it is therefore possible to determine the surprisal associated with English sentences. The issues and pull requests of software repository issue trackers give insight into the development process and likely contain the surprising events of this process. Objective. Prior works have identified that unusual events in software repositories are of interest to developers, and use simple code metrics-based methods for detecting them. In this study we will propose a new method for unusual event detection in software repositories using surprisal. With the ability to find surprising issues and pull requests, we intend to further analyse them to determine if they actually hold importance in a repository, or if they pose a significant challenge to address. If it is possible to find bad surprises early, or before they cause additional troubles, it is plausible that effort, cost and time will be saved as a result. Method. After extracting the issues and pull requests from 5000 of the most popular software repositories on GitHub, we will train a language model to represent these issues. We will measure their perceived importance in the repository, measure their resolution difficulty using several analogues, measure the surprisal of each, and finally generate inferential statistics to describe any correlations.
The success of deep learning attracted interest in whether the brain learns hierarchical representations using gradient-based learning. However, current biologically plausible methods for gradient-based credit assignment in deep neural networks need infinitesimally small feedback signals, which is problematic in biologically realistic noisy environments and at odds with experimental evidence in neuroscience showing that top-down feedback can significantly influence neural activity. Building upon deep feedback control (DFC), a recently proposed credit assignment method, we combine strong feedback influences on neural activity with gradient-based learning and show that this naturally leads to a novel view on neural network optimization. Instead of gradually changing the network weights towards configurations with low output loss, weight updates gradually minimize the amount of feedback required from a controller that drives the network to the supervised output label. Moreover, we show that the use of strong feedback in DFC allows learning forward and feedback connections simultaneously, using a learning rule fully local in space and time. We complement our theoretical results with experiments on standard computer-vision benchmarks, showing competitive performance to backpropagation as well as robustness to noise. Overall, our work presents a fundamentally novel view of learning as control minimization, while sidestepping biologically unrealistic assumptions.
This paper focuses on the expected difference in borrower's repayment when there is a change in the lender's credit decisions. Classical estimators overlook the confounding effects and hence the estimation error can be magnificent. As such, we propose another approach to construct the estimators such that the error can be greatly reduced. The proposed estimators are shown to be unbiased, consistent, and robust through a combination of theoretical analysis and numerical testing. Moreover, we compare the power of estimating the causal quantities between the classical estimators and the proposed estimators. The comparison is tested across a wide range of models, including linear regression models, tree-based models, and neural network-based models, under different simulated datasets that exhibit different levels of causality, different degrees of nonlinearity, and different distributional properties. Most importantly, we apply our approaches to a large observational dataset provided by a global technology firm that operates in both the e-commerce and the lending business. We find that the relative reduction of estimation error is strikingly substantial if the causal effects are accounted for correctly.
