A classic result by Stockmeyer gives a non-elementary lower bound to the emptiness problem for star-free generalized regular expressions. This result is intimately connected to the satisfiability problem for interval temporal logic, notably for formulas that make use of the so-called chop operator. Such an operator can indeed be interpreted as the inverse of the concatenation operation on regular languages, and this correspondence enables reductions between non-emptiness of star-free generalized regular expressions and satisfiability of formulas of the interval temporal logic of chop under the homogeneity assumption. In this paper, we study the complexity of the satisfiability problem for suitable weakenings of the chop interval temporal logic, that can be equivalently viewed as fragments of Halpern and Shoham interval logic. We first consider the logic $\mathsf{BD}_{hom}$ featuring modalities $B$, for \emph{begins}, corresponding to the prefix relation on pairs of intervals, and $D$, for \emph{during}, corresponding to the infix relation. The homogeneous models of $\mathsf{BD}_{hom}$ naturally correspond to languages defined by restricted forms of regular expressions, that use union, complementation, and the inverses of the prefix and infix relations. Such a fragment has been recently shown to be PSPACE-complete . In this paper, we study the extension $\mathsf{BD}_{hom}$ with the temporal neighborhood modality $A$ (corresponding to the Allen relation \emph{Meets}), and prove that it increases both its expressiveness and complexity. In particular, we show that the resulting logic $\mathsf{BDA}_{hom}$ is EXPSPACE-complete.

In the author's previous paper (Zhang et al. 2022), exponential convergence was proved for the perfectly matched layers (PML) approximation of scattering problems with periodic surfaces in 2D. However, due to the overlapping of singularities, an exceptional case, i.e., when the wave number is a half integer, has to be excluded in the proof. However, numerical results for these cases still have fast convergence rate and this motivates us to go deeper into these cases. In this paper, we focus on these cases and prove that the fast convergence result for the discretized form. Numerical examples are also presented to support our theoretical results.

This paper explores the impact of biologically plausible neuron models on the performance of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) for regression tasks. While SNNs are widely recognized for classification tasks, their application to Scientific Machine Learning and regression remains underexplored. We focus on the membrane component of SNNs, comparing four neuron models: Leaky Integrate-and-Fire, FitzHugh-Nagumo, Izhikevich, and Hodgkin-Huxley. We investigate their effect on SNN accuracy and efficiency for function regression tasks, by using Euler and Runge-Kutta 4th-order approximation schemes. We show how more biologically plausible neuron models improve the accuracy of SNNs while reducing the number of spikes in the system. The latter represents an energetic gain on actual neuromorphic chips since it directly reflects the amount of energy required for the computations.

In this paper we consider a nonlinear poroelasticity model that describes the quasi-static mechanical behaviour of a fluid-saturated porous medium whose permeability depends on the divergence of the displacement. Such nonlinear models are typically used to study biological structures like tissues, organs, cartilage and bones, which are known for a nonlinear dependence of their permeability/hydraulic conductivity on solid dilation. We formulate (extend to the present situation) one of the most popular splitting schemes, namely the fixed-stress split method for the iterative solution of the coupled problem. The method is proven to converge linearly for sufficiently small time steps under standard assumptions. The error contraction factor then is strictly less than one, independent of the Lam\'{e} parameters, Biot and storage coefficients if the hydraulic conductivity is a strictly positive, bounded and Lipschitz-continuous function.

Detecting differences in gene expression is an important part of single-cell RNA sequencing experiments, and many statistical methods have been developed for this aim. Most differential expression analyses focus on comparing expression between two groups (e.g., treatment vs. control). But there is increasing interest in multi-condition differential expression analyses in which expression is measured in many conditions, and the aim is to accurately detect and estimate expression differences in all conditions. We show that directly modeling single-cell RNA-seq counts in all conditions simultaneously, while also inferring how expression differences are shared across conditions, leads to greatly improved performance for detecting and estimating expression differences compared to existing methods. We illustrate the potential of this new approach by analyzing data from a single-cell experiment studying the effects of cytokine stimulation on gene expression. We call our new method "Poisson multivariate adaptive shrinkage", and it is implemented in an R package available online at //github.com/stephenslab/poisson.mash.alpha.

The paper introduces a new meshfree pseudospectral method based on Gaussian radial basis functions (RBFs) collocation to solve fractional Poisson equations. Hypergeometric functions are used to represent the fractional Laplacian of Gaussian RBFs, enabling an efficient computation of stiffness matrix entries. Unlike existing RBF-based methods, our approach ensures a Toeplitz structure in the stiffness matrix with equally spaced RBF centers, enabling efficient matrix-vector multiplications using fast Fourier transforms. We conduct a comprehensive study on the shape parameter selection, addressing challenges related to ill-conditioning and numerical stability. The main contribution of our work includes rigorous stability analysis and error estimates of the Gaussian RBF collocation method, representing a first attempt at the rigorous analysis of RBF-based methods for fractional PDEs to the best of our knowledge. We conduct numerical experiments to validate our analysis and provide practical insights for implementation.

We present a non-intrusive gradient algorithm for parameter estimation problems in non-stationary elasticity. To avoid multiple (and potentially expensive) solutions of the underlying partial differential equation (PDE), we approximate the PDE solver by a neural network within the gradient algorithm. The network is trained offline for a given set of parameters. The algorithm is applied to an unsteady linear-elastic contact problem; its convergence and approximation properties are investigated numerically.

In large-scale systems there are fundamental challenges when centralised techniques are used for task allocation. The number of interactions is limited by resource constraints such as on computation, storage, and network communication. We can increase scalability by implementing the system as a distributed task-allocation system, sharing tasks across many agents. However, this also increases the resource cost of communications and synchronisation, and is difficult to scale. In this paper we present four algorithms to solve these problems. The combination of these algorithms enable each agent to improve their task allocation strategy through reinforcement learning, while changing how much they explore the system in response to how optimal they believe their current strategy is, given their past experience. We focus on distributed agent systems where the agents' behaviours are constrained by resource usage limits, limiting agents to local rather than system-wide knowledge. We evaluate these algorithms in a simulated environment where agents are given a task composed of multiple subtasks that must be allocated to other agents with differing capabilities, to then carry out those tasks. We also simulate real-life system effects such as networking instability. Our solution is shown to solve the task allocation problem to 6.7% of the theoretical optimal within the system configurations considered. It provides 5x better performance recovery over no-knowledge retention approaches when system connectivity is impacted, and is tested against systems up to 100 agents with less than a 9% impact on the algorithms' performance.
