A family $\mathcal{F}$ of sets satisfies the $(p,q)$-property if among every $p$ members of $\mathcal{F}$, some $q$ can be pierced by a single point. The celebrated $(p,q)$-theorem of Alon and Kleitman asserts that for any $p \geq q \geq d+1$, any family $\mathcal{F}$ of compact convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that satisfies the $(p,q)$-property can be pierced by a finite number $c(p,q,d)$ of points. A similar theorem with respect to piercing by $(d-1)$-dimensional flats, called $(d-1)$-transversals, was obtained by Alon and Kalai. In this paper we prove the following result, which can be viewed as an $(\aleph_0,k+2)$-theorem with respect to $k$-transversals: Let $\mathcal{F}$ be an infinite family of closed balls in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and let $0 \leq k < d$. If among every $\aleph_0$ elements of $\mathcal{F}$, some $k+2$ can be pierced by a $k$-dimensional flat, then $\mathcal{F}$ can be pierced by a finite number of $k$-dimensional flats. The same result holds also for a wider class of families which consist of \emph{near-balls}, to be defined below. This is the first $(p,q)$-theorem in which the assumption is weakened to an $(\infty,\cdot)$ assumption. Our proofs combine geometric and topological tools.

The Gromov--Hausdorff distance measures the difference in shape between compact metric spaces and poses a notoriously difficult problem in combinatorial optimization. We introduce its quadratic relaxation over a convex polytope whose solutions provably deliver the Gromov--Hausdorff distance. The optimality guarantee is enabled by the fact that the search space of our approach is not constrained to a generalization of bijections, unlike in other relaxations such as the Gromov--Wasserstein distance. We suggest the Frank--Wolfe algorithm for solving the relaxation in $O(n^3)$ time per iteration, and numerically demonstrate its performance on metric spaces of hundreds of points. In particular, we use it to obtain a new bound of the Gromov--Hausdorff distance between the unit circle and the unit hemisphere equipped with Euclidean metric. Our approach is implemented as a Python package dGH.

Weighted low rank approximation is a fundamental problem in numerical linear algebra, and it has many applications in machine learning. Given a matrix $M \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$, a weight matrix $W \in \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}^{n \times n}$, a parameter $k$, the goal is to output two matrices $U, V \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times k}$ such that $\| W \circ (M - U V^\top) \|_F$ is minimized, where $\circ$ denotes the Hadamard product. Such a problem is known to be NP-hard and even hard to approximate assuming Exponential Time Hypothesis [GG11, RSW16]. Meanwhile, alternating minimization is a good heuristic solution for approximating weighted low rank approximation. The work [LLR16] shows that, under mild assumptions, alternating minimization does provide provable guarantees. In this work, we develop an efficient and robust framework for alternating minimization. For weighted low rank approximation, this improves the runtime of [LLR16] from $n^2 k^2$ to $n^2k$. At the heart of our work framework is a high-accuracy multiple response regression solver together with a robust analysis of alternating minimization.

We use a combination of unsupervised clustering and sparsity-promoting inference algorithms to learn locally dominant force balances that explain macroscopic pattern formation in self-organized active particle systems. The self-organized emergence of macroscopic patterns from microscopic interactions between self-propelled particles can be widely observed nature. Although hydrodynamic theories help us better understand the physical basis of this phenomenon, identifying a sufficient set of local interactions that shape, regulate, and sustain self-organized structures in active particle systems remains challenging. We investigate a classic hydrodynamic model of self-propelled particles that produces a wide variety of patterns, like asters and moving density bands. Our data-driven analysis shows that propagating bands are formed by local alignment interactions driven by density gradients, while steady-state asters are shaped by a mechanism of splay-induced negative compressibility arising from strong particle interactions. Our method also reveals analogous physical principles of pattern formation in a system where the speed of the particle is influenced by local density. This demonstrates the ability of our method to reveal physical commonalities across models. The physical mechanisms inferred from the data are in excellent agreement with analytical scaling arguments and experimental observations.

The vertex cover problem is a fundamental and widely studied combinatorial optimization problem. It is known that its standard linear programming relaxation is integral for bipartite graphs and half-integral for general graphs. As a consequence, the natural rounding algorithm based on this relaxation computes an optimal solution for bipartite graphs and a $2$-approximation for general graphs. This raises the question of whether one can interpolate the rounding curve of the standard linear programming relaxation in a beyond the worst-case manner, depending on how close the graph is to being bipartite. In this paper, we consider a simple rounding algorithm that exploits the knowledge of an induced bipartite subgraph to attain improved approximation ratios. Equivalently, we suppose that we work with a pair $(G, S)$, consisting of a graph with an odd cycle transversal. If $S$ is a stable set, we prove a tight approximation ratio of $1 + 1/\rho$, where $2\rho -1$ denotes the odd girth (i.e., length of the shortest odd cycle) of the contracted graph $\tilde{G} := G /S$ and satisfies $\rho \in [2,\infty]$. If $S$ is an arbitrary set, we prove a tight approximation ratio of $\left(1+1/\rho \right) (1 - \alpha) + 2 \alpha$, where $\alpha \in [0,1]$ is a natural parameter measuring the quality of the set $S$. The technique used to prove tight improved approximation ratios relies on a structural analysis of the contracted graph $\tilde{G}$. Tightness is shown by constructing classes of weight functions matching the obtained upper bounds. As a byproduct of the structural analysis, we obtain improved tight bounds on the integrality gap and the fractional chromatic number of 3-colorable graphs. We also discuss algorithmic applications in order to find good odd cycle transversals and show optimality of the analysis.

The "Sum-Over-Paths" formalism is a way to symbolically manipulate linear maps that describe quantum systems, and is a tool that is used in formal verification of such systems. We give here a new set of rewrite rules for the formalism, and show that it is complete for "Toffoli-Hadamard", the simplest approximately universal fragment of quantum mechanics. We show that the rewriting is terminating, but not confluent (which is expected from the universality of the fragment). We do so using the connection between Sum-over-Paths and graphical language ZH-calculus, and also show how the axiomatisation translates into the latter. We provide generalisations of the presented rewrite rules, that can prove useful when trying to reduce terms in practice, and we show how to graphically make sense of these new rules. We show how to enrich the rewrite system to reach completeness for the dyadic fragments of quantum computation, used in particular in the Quantum Fourier Transform, and obtained by adding phase gates with dyadic multiples of $\pi$ to the Toffoli-Hadamard gate-set. Finally, we show how to perform sums and concatenation of arbitrary terms, something which is not native in a system designed for analysing gate-based quantum computation, but necessary when considering Hamiltonian-based quantum computation.

It is known that the generating function associated with the enumeration of non-backtracking walks on finite graphs is a rational matrix-valued function of the parameter; such function is also closely related to graph-theoretical results such as Ihara's theorem and the zeta function on graphs. In [P. Grindrod, D. J. Higham, V. Noferini, The deformed graph Laplacian and its application to network centrality analysis, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 39(1), 310--341, 2018], the radius of convergence of the generating function was studied for simple (i.e., undirected, unweighted and with no loops) graphs, and shown to depend on the number of cycles in the graph. In this paper, we use technologies from the theory of polynomial and rational matrices to greatly extend these results by studying the radius of convergence of the corresponding generating function for general, possibly directed and/or weighted, graphs. We give an analogous characterization of the radius of convergence for directed unweighted graphs, showing that it depends on the number of cycles in the undirectization of the graph. For weighted graphs, we provide for the first time an exact formula for the radius of convergence, improving a previous result that exhibited a lower bound. Finally, we consider also backtracking-downweighted walks on unweighted digraphs, and we prove a version of Ihara's theorem in that case.

We consider the algorithmic problem of finding large \textit{balanced} independent sets in sparse random bipartite graphs, and more generally the problem of finding independent sets with specified proportions of vertices on each side of the bipartition. In a bipartite graph it is trivial to find an independent set of density at least half (take one of the partition classes). In contrast, in a random bipartite graph of average degree $d$, the largest balanced independent sets (containing equal number of vertices from each class) are typically of density $(2+o_d(1)) \frac{\log d}{d}$. Can we find such large balanced independent sets in these graphs efficiently? By utilizing the overlap gap property and the low-degree algorithmic framework, we prove that local and low-degree algorithms (even those that know the bipartition) cannot find balanced independent sets of density greater than $(1+\epsilon) \frac{\log d}{d}$ for any $\epsilon>0$ fixed and $d$ large but constant. This factor $2$ statistical--computational gap between what exists and what local algorithms can achieve is analogous to the gap for finding large independent sets in (non-bipartite) random graphs. Our results therefor suggest that this gap is pervasive in many models, and that hard computational problems can lurk inside otherwise tractable ones. A particularly striking aspect of the gap in bipartite graphs is that the algorithm achieving the lower bound is extremely simple and can be implemented as a $1$-local algorithm and a degree-$1$ polynomial (a linear function).

We study the consistent k-center clustering problem. In this problem, the goal is to maintain a constant factor approximate $k$-center solution during a sequence of $n$ point insertions and deletions while minimizing the recourse, i.e., the number of changes made to the set of centers after each point insertion or deletion. Previous works by Lattanzi and Vassilvitskii [ICML '12] and Fichtenberger, Lattanzi, Norouzi-Fard, and Svensson [SODA '21] showed that in the incremental setting, where deletions are not allowed, one can obtain $k \cdot \textrm{polylog}(n) / n$ amortized recourse for both $k$-center and $k$-median, and demonstrated a matching lower bound. However, no algorithm for the fully dynamic setting achieves less than the trivial $O(k)$ changes per update, which can be obtained by simply reclustering the full dataset after every update. In this work, we give the first algorithm for consistent $k$-center clustering for the fully dynamic setting, i.e., when both point insertions and deletions are allowed, and improves upon a trivial $O(k)$ recourse bound. Specifically, our algorithm maintains a constant factor approximate solution while ensuring worst-case constant recourse per update, which is optimal in the fully dynamic setting. Moreover, our algorithm is deterministic and is therefore correct even if an adaptive adversary chooses the insertions and deletions.

A classic result in formal language theory is the equivalence among non-counting, or aperiodic, regular languages, and languages defined through star-free regular expressions, or first-order logic. Past attempts to extend this result beyond the realm of regular languages have met with difficulties: for instance it is known that star-free tree languages may violate the non-counting property and there are aperiodic tree languages that cannot be defined through first-order logic. We extend such classic equivalence results to a significant family of deterministic context-free languages, the operator-precedence languages (OPL), which strictly includes the widely investigated visibly pushdown, alias input-driven, family and other structured context-free languages. The OP model originated in the '60s for defining programming languages and is still used by high performance compilers; its rich algebraic properties have been investigated initially in connection with grammar learning and recently completed with further closure properties and with monadic second order logic definition. We introduce an extension of regular expressions, the OP-expressions (OPE) which define the OPLs and, under the star-free hypothesis, define first-order definable and non-counting OPLs. Then, we prove, through a fairly articulated grammar transformation, that aperiodic OPLs are first-order definable. Thus, the classic equivalence of star-freeness, aperiodicity, and first-order definability is established for the large and powerful class of OPLs. We argue that the same approach can be exploited to obtain analogous results for visibly pushdown languages too.

The main objective of the present paper is to construct a new class of space-time discretizations for the stochastic $p$-Stokes system and analyze its stability and convergence properties. We derive regularity results for the approximation that are similar to the natural regularity of solutions. One of the key arguments relies on discrete extrapolation that allows to relate lower moments of discrete maximal processes. We show that, if the generic spatial discretization is constraint conforming, then the velocity approximation satisfies a best-approximation property in the natural distance. Moreover, we present an example such that the resulting velocity approximation converges with rate $1/2$ in time and $1$ in space towards the (unknown) target velocity with respect to the natural distance.
